He sees the most challenging aspect of the position to be, “getting to work on all the issues.” Newsome said he feels that he has received “strong support,” in his campaign so far, and looks forward to engaging with district constituents moving toward election day. He said that he would let the city voters decide on those issues. Newsome said he had no opinion about the measures on the November ballot such as Measure N, the empty homes tax, Measure O, the fate of the Santa Cruz Library and Measure P, the transient occupancy tax. He also seeks to preserve and bolster city parks and open spaces. Some of the issues that are important to Newsome are economic recovery and growth, creating safe neighborhoods and building more affordable housing. “I want young people in our community to be able to settle down here and build careers and a family,” Newsome said. Newsome, whose expertise lies in American government, political and economic inequality and public policy, was inspired to run for the seat because he “wants to give back to this great community,” and because he wants a brighter future for children in the city. One of the candidates is UC Santa Cruz political science department lecturer, author and father of two, Scott Newsome, who has lived in Santa Cruz for nearly a decade. District 6, which envelops much of the city’s west side and UC Santa Cruz, is being sought by incumbent Renee Golder and newcomer Sean Maxwell.ĭistrict 4, which contains downtown Santa Cruz, Beach Flats, Municipal Wharf, and portions of the west side has four candidates in the running for the seat, none of which have run for political office in the past.
